The Bedroom of the Future - And So To Bed

The Bedroom of the Future

With the title of bedchamber, dressing room, dormitory, boudoir and more, the bedroom has clearly performed differing roles throughout history, all of which transpire from what is in essence, a ‘sleeping quarters.’ But when you consider that the average human being spends a third of their life in the land of nod then you can begin to understand why and how this simple, four-walled space has evolved and devolved over time in conjunction with culture, society and all that comes with it.

So what does this mean for the future of bedrooms?

What does the future of the bedroom look like?

Obviously, sleeping will remain one of the primary functions and thus a ‘bed’ will always be integral to a ‘bedroom,’ but in a world concerned with space and a growing culture of social and environmental responsibility, the bedroom is again subject to the push and pull of society’s wants and needs. This is already noticeable in hotel bedrooms – Japanese capsule hotels have inspired a number of similar -if slightly more spacious in the context of things- hotel bedrooms across the western world with energy savings, space and simplicity at the crux of their offering. But this is in the world of hospitality and the bedroom at home is born out of personal needs, not business requirements.

So, I’m not suggesting that the master bedrooms of 2050 are going to be a 2m x 1m x 1m hole in the wall - that would be too extreme. No, for me, it is simplicity and the elegant use of space that will be key influencers upon the future of bedrooms, alongside a rejection of unnecessary technology within these private spaces. In a world where technology invades almost all aspects of life, and boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred within the home, a return to simple, chic bedroom design is imminent and something we at And So To Bed have always looked to help our customers achieve – past, present and future.

If present bedrooms are defined by computers in the corner, a TV on the wall and surrounding clutter, bedrooms of the future will be the antithesis – spacious sanctuary, with only those necessary objets d’art, essential items and of course, a beautiful bed within it. The bedroom is a sanctuary and long may it be so.
